Biography

I am a diagnostic radiographer at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. I am currently in my preceptorship year, working across the routine and emergency X-ray departments, fluoroscopy, endoscopy and the diverse range of operating theatres of a large major trauma centre.

I am also the Social Media Co-ordinator of the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences (JMIRS). I manage the journal's online communications, including promoting the latest cutting-edge research.

Finally, I am a visiting lecturer at City, University of London. This year, I am teaching on the Patient Centred Care Application in Medical Imaging course, which is the only one of its kind in the country.

As a student radiographer, I won several awards including the UK Student Diagnostic Radiographer of the Year 2022 from the Society of Radiographers and the Forder Memorial Award, a prize for the best paper proffered by a student at UKIO (UK Imaging and Oncology) Congress from the College of Radiographers.

Research

I am passionate about improving the care and support that neurodivergent (autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, dyspraxic, etc.) people receive. I’ve published academic articles, guested on podcasts and given talks on neurodiversity to universities, professional bodies and NHS trusts/organisations. This has previously included the support needed for neurodivergent healthcare students but now focuses more on improving the care of neurodivergent patients in diagnostic imaging services.

I am in the rare position of being neurodivergent myself and working clinically, which gives me insights into the perspective of an autistic or ADHD patient and the professionals providing their care. This dual understanding allows me to identify patient needs that are not being addressed, while also considering what solutions are feasible and sustainable within the current healthcare environment.

I have presented my research at national and international conferences, such as the European Radiology Congress (2024), the UK Imaging & Oncology Congress (2022, 2023 and 2024) and Achieving Excellence in Radiography Education and Research (2023).

Advocacy

I was selected for the Council of Deans of Health’s Student Leadership Programme (#150Leaders) during my degree. The program acted as a springboard, leading to my co-founding SSHINE, a student-led initiative to improve support for neurodivergent students in nursing and allied health professions. We wrote the NHS England Guide to Practice-Based Learning (PBL) for Neurodivergent Students and give talks to various organisations.

Focusing on the specific needs of neurodivergent student radiographers led me to create a visual reference guide for radiographic positioning. This was published and disseminated by The Society of Radiographers in 2022. It has helped hundreds of students and as a result, a second edition is set to be released later this year.
